23 Full-size imageFull-size image 1947 LIZZIE J. COX (BUGEYE: 1905-1938) BALTIMORE; MARYLAND; UNITED STATES BALTIMORE - MARYLAND - UNITED STATES - Artist NOTES: The LIZZIE J. COX was a frame bugeye built at John Branford at Fishing Island, Maryland, in 1905. This type of craft originated on the Chesapeake Bay sometime after the Civil War and was used in general freighting and for dredging oysters on these waters. They decreased in popularity when the shipjack was introduced near the end of the 19th century. The COX was sold to New England owners in 1937. On August 21, 1938, she foundered in Bristol Harbor, Rhode Island. Vessel dimensions: 67.6 x 18.5 x 5. The Museum commissioned the artist to painting this painting and QO 753. NOTES: See M.V. Brewington, "Chesapeake Bay Bugeyes (1941), numerous references and plans (see Index). [Excerpt from article in Daily Press] The "Lizzie J. Cox" was a frame bugeye 67.6 feet in length, built in 1905 at Fishing Island, Maryland. She had been used in the oyster trade, and in the off season freighted wheat and watermelons to the Baltimore market. After more than thirty years service on the Chesapeake she was sold and taken north. On September 21, 1938, she was caught in the path of a hurricane which swept through New England and foundered in Bristol Harbor, Rhode Island. 1947.0754.000001

65 1861 Newport News (Va.).; Hampton Roads (Va. : Region).; Fort Monroe (Va.).; United States–History–Civil War, 1861-1865–Personal narratives.; United States–History–Naval operations, Confederate. Civil War, 1861-1865 Peninsular Campaign, 1862–Personal narratives. The collection consists of four manuscript letters from Edwin F. Orr, 11th New York Infantry, to family members such as his parents, sisters, and brothers. The letters span the dates January to May, 1862, and are written from Newport News, VA. In addition, the collection contains a newspaper clipping from the New York Herald from Dec. 30, 1861, chronicling the attack on the Union steamer Express by the Confederate gunboat Sea Bird. - Two of the four letters and the clipping refer to the brief exchange on Dec. 29, 1861 between Express, her tow the schooner Sherwood, and Sea Bird. In the exchange, Sea Bird attacked Express and her charge en route to Fort Monroe with a supply of fresh water. Express, being fired upon by a 32-pounder gun, evidently cut her tow to avoid being sunk or taken, causing the schooner to be taken as a Confederate prize. Express and the crew of the Sherwood escaped, and Union efforts to rescue Sherwood proved unsuccessful. - The other two letters contain information about the massing of troops in Newport News as part of the Peninsular Campaign, and the preparation for the occupation of Norfolk on May 10, 1862. This collection of items-original and copied-from the second half of the nineteenth century focuses on both the civilian and military careers of James M. Duncan. Featuring a variety of certificates, letters, tickets, and records, this collection reflects Mr. Duncan's work aboard numerous steamships in Europe as well as his service in the Confederate Navy during the American Civil War. Of interest is the fact that, although serving in the Confederate States of America military, Mr. Duncan was a Scottish citizen who did not formally immigrate to the United States until 1873. MS0079

This is a collection of six letters written by private Stephen Brooks who was a cook in Company B of the 6th New Hampshire Infantry Volunteers. Five letters are addressed to his wife and one letter to a Mr. Nelson. These letters mostly contain information about his daily life and where he was stationed, as well as advice to his wife and the granting of guardianship of his wife to Mr. Nelson. 69 1865 United States–History–Blockades. Civil War, 1861-1865; United States–History–Naval operations, Confederate. Civil War, 1861-1865; United States–History–Civil War, 1861-1865–Personal narratives. This small collection focuses on the Civil War service of Andrew Jackson Forrest, primarily aboard the Confederate blockade runner Imogene. His certificate of discharge from the Imogene in Liverpool in 1865 is of particular interest. In 1912, Forrest traveled to Wilmington, North Carolina with his wife to visit with some old shipmates from his blockade running days. This visit occasioned two letters in the collection that he wrote to his son, William, in which he discusses his Civil War service and the reunions with old shipmates. A third, undated, letter from his brother-in-law, William B. Needham, to William Forrest includes a newspaper clipping from the Wilmington Star that describes Andrew Forrest's 1912 visit to the area. Also present in the collection is a copy print of an original work of art that purports to show the Imogene. MS0574
70 LP192LP192 1852 EMPIRE STATE (SIDE-WHEEL STEAMBOAT: 1848-1877) NEW YORK; UNITED STATES NEW YORK - NEW YORK - UNITED STATES - Publisher; FALL RIVER - MASSACHUSETTS - UNITED STATES - Related Place NOTES: Information about print by Gloria Deak, Picturing America, item 638: The Indians called Fall River "Quequechan," meaning "falling water." The town is situated at the mouth of the Taunton River, about fifty miles south of Boston, on an abrupt elevation of land. The first settlement had its origins in the expansion of Plymouth Colony around 1656, when the General Court of Plymouth granted a tract of land to a number of freemen of the jurisdiction. The grant was subsequently confirmed by a warranty deed signed by the local sachems, who, in turn, were given "twenty coats, two rugs, two iron pots, two kettles and one little kettle, eight pairs of shoes, six pairs of stockings, one dozen hoes, one dozen hatchets, two yards of broadcloth and a debt satisfied to John Barnes, which was due from Wamsitta to John Barnes." One of the earliest seventeenth-century settlers was John Borden, whose family name figures prominently throughout Fall River history. The town's growth was slow until the nineteenth century, when Fall River's natural advantages-water power, a mild, moist climate, and a good harbor-trans-formed it into a booming textile center. The water power came from the Quequechan River, which, with its nine sets of falls, ran down to the Taunton River. Cotton mills proliferated, and by 1876 Fall River could boast that it had 1,269,048 spindles - over one-eighth of all the spindles in the United States - and 30,144 looms operating in forty mills. In 1917 the count would be 4,000,000 whirling spindles. Benjamin Franklin Smith's large, tinted lithograph shows us a highly industrialized town, which we view from across the Taunton. In the foreground is Somerset. Scanning right from the open farm spaces at the left, we come into a heavy concentration of buildings, where elegant churches and large residences mingle with solidly built factories. Six of the churches make themselves easily identifiable by poking their towers or spires above the skyline. From left to right they are: the First Baptist Church; the Old Stone Church (First Congregational); the Central Congregational Church; the First Methodist Church; the Unitarian Society; and the Baptist Temple. The First Baptist Church (with the solid square tower) and the Baptist Temple (on the hill just to the left of the two factory smokestacks) are still standing. Between the third and fourth churches, the large horizontal building with a tower is the Pocasset Mill. The busy shipping of the Taunton River includes rigged vessels and steam packets, and the names of two of the latter can be made out: the Bradford Durfee and the Empire State. The Bradford Durfee had a square engine and was put into service in 1845. She was named after Major Bradford Durfee, one of Fall River's most active businessmen. "He was one of the original eight owners of the Fall River Iron Works Co., formed in 1821, and was conspicuously active in the improvement of what is known as 'below the hill.' In building operations, in the construction of wharves, in the getting out of stone, in de-vising means to accomplish certain ends, in readiness of comprehension and clearness in imparting ideas, in all the various ways in which one man gains and retains an influence over others, perhaps Major Durfee has never had a superior in the city" (Henry H. Earl, A Centennial History of Fall River, p. 27). Another important figure is Colonel Richard Borden, who was also connected with the Fall River Iron Works and who, with his brother Jefferson, ran the American Print works. (The buildings of these establishments can be seen in the lithograph sending up smoke from the shore of the Taunton.) Because they wanted to ship their goods to New York, they built a line of steamers; the Empire State was their second packet. To get their goods to Boston, they built a railroad that joined with the line out of New Bedford into Braintree and then went on to Boston. By 1852, Fall River mills began to use steam: the schooners we see on the river are probably bringing coal as well as lumber to the mills. The little sailboats may be bringing produce to the markets from the farms on the Somerset side. In 1892, Fall River was the scene of a celebrated murder involving the Borden family. Lizzie Borden was charged, and then acquitted, of the ax murder of her father and stepmother. Impressions of the Smith lithograph, printed by the firm of Sarony and Major in New York, are owned by the Fall River Historical Society, the Boston Athenaeum, the American Antiquarian Society, the Mariners' Museum in Newport News, Virginia, and the New York Historical Society. VESSEL INFORMATION - VESSEL NAME: EMPIRE STATE VESSEL TYPE: steamboat SERVICE DATES: 1848-1877 SHIP BUILDER: Samuel Sneeden BUILDER LOCATION: New York SHIP OWNERS: Bay State Steamboat Company VESSEL DIMENSIONS: 317' (length) x 40' (breadth x 13'6"(depth of hold), 1,691 tonnage; vertical beam engine having cylinder 76", and stroke 144". VESSEL HISTORY: The Bay State Steamboat Co. incorporated in 1847 was in 1863 changed to "Boston, Newport & New York Steamboat Co.", the forerunner of the Fall River Line. The EMPIRE STATE was the second steam of the Fall River Line. Before launching , the EMPIRE STATE was tentatively named the PLYMOUTH ROCK, but the name was changed before launching. The keel of the EMPIRE STATE was laid on June 29, 1847 and the hull was launched March 18, 1848. A few months later she was completed andput into serivce on the Fall River Line. Soon afterwards, however, on January 13, 1849, she was burned at the dock in Fall River, at a loss of nearly $200,000. The hull was raised and repaired, towed to New York, and there the superstructure was rebuilt. On July 26, 1856, when she was near Point Judith, eastbound, her starboard steam chimney gave way, resulting in injury of serveral passengers through escaping the steam. In 1857 she sank, when near Hell Gate, and in the next year she struck a rock, about 30 miles from New York, and as a result sank again. In both cases the damage was not extensive and she was soon repaired. This vessel was chiefly used as a spare boat after the NEWPORT & OLD COLONY were built for the Line in 1865. In 1871 she was sold, and was rebuilt as an excursion steamer. She was at Bristol, Rhode Island, being reconditioned for summer service when she was accidentally destroyed by fire on May 14, 1877. 1934.1033.000001
